Benefits of Greek Life

It is not unusual to hear a fraternity man credit his chapter for contributing more to his education than the classes he attended at college. Why?

As a new student to the Oklahoma State University, you are no doubt being hit with a barrage of information about the wide variety of experiences that college life has to offer. Spend as much time as possible reading and evaluating this information, the things that you will learn are not fabrication, and if you’re serious about making the most of college and life, you will find them important.

A lot of students attend OSU. People from backgrounds as far ranging as you can imagine. You will come into contact with many in your classes. Some you will develop friendships with. You will also get a first class education inside of the classroom from quality faculty. However, you will do your greatest learning outside the classroom, and you will develop your lifelong friendships from those you meet in organizations.

And guess what? It is these things which the Greek system is best at helping develop. It is these abilities, this learning outside of the classroom that makes the greek system what it is. By banding together as a group of individuals with common objectives, an atmosphere is fostered where leadership, communication, conflict management and interpersonal skills are demanded. Out of this need springs learning, adapting and personal growth. Fraternity life, above all the many other benefits it offers, gives you practice for life in the real world.

So, when you hear a fraternity man credit his success to his fraternity…believe him!

  • Out of the 5,000 general fraternity chapters, a majority consistently achieve higher grade point averages than the all male averages.
  • 65% of fraternity members graduate from college, compared with only 45% of non-members.
  • Of the current United States Senators ad Representatives, 24% are fraternity members.
  • 85% of the U.S. Supreme Court Justices since 1910, have been Greek.
  • Of the nation’s 50 largest corporations, 43 are headed by Greeks.
  • 85% of Fortune 500 executives are fraternity members.
  • 71% of the Who’s Who in America listees are also fraternity members.
  • Greek grades are consistently higher.
  • Greek alumni continue to be generous donors to the University.

Friendship
At Oklahoma State University, fraternities and sororities enable young men and women to establish strong friendships that last far beyond their college years. Affiliation provides members with an opportunity to interact with other students of all ages, backgrounds and interests. Members meet a diverse group of people within the Greek community and other student organizations. Membership offers a network of support while making the transition to college life.

Academic Support
Knowing the reason your son is at OSU is to get an education, the Greek system has made academics a top priority.  Many chapters have an academic development program which enforces a strict academic policy that includes maintaining a respectable grade point average to participate in chapter activities.  In addition, many of the chapter houses include quiet places to study as well as resource rooms or libraries complete with computers with online connections and copy/fax machines.

Leadership
The Greek community is strongly united and growing in numbers. On campus, Greek members have proven themselves as empowered, strong campus leaders.

Because fraternity and sorority chapters are self-governing bodies in which the members take on the responsibilities and offices of the organization, Greek life is a special living and learning environment. The hands-on experience helps members develop leadership, organization and communication skills. Chapters and members interact and make connections with other student organizations and departments on campus. Greeks learn the importance of dedication, working with others, responsibility and self-reliance. In addition, there are many leadership opportunities within the Greek community apart from those within each chapter. Whether a member is a natural leader, wants to cultivate his/her skills or just wants to be involved, Greek life will help him/her develop their unique, individual potential.

Service
One of the most gratifying aspects of Greek life is the sense of satisfaction and pride that comes with involvement in community service.  Greeks throughout North America recognize local and national organizations in need of aid by donating time and money through their special philanthropies and service projects. OSU Greeks raise tens of thousands of dollars and devote thousands of hours in hands-on service each year to a variety of projects that benefit the citizens on a local and national level. In addition, the Greek community comes together several times per year to perform joint projects for both the campus and the community. Whether raising money or donating time, service is an essential part of the Greek experience.

What is Greek Discovery Day? (top)

Greek Discovery Day is a wonderful opportunity to visit Oklahoma State University and see what fraternity and sorority life is all about! High school juniors and seniors and their parents can meet members of the OSU Greek community and learn more about the recruitment process, the benefits of Greek membership and all that’s great about “going Greek.” Current non-Greek OSU students also are welcome.

Our Greek letter organizations are hoping to build on the success of last year’s event, and we have planned plenty of informative, exciting programs for students and parents to enjoy.

Hazing (top)

A common concern about Greek affiliation is hazing. All Greek governing bodies at OSU have policies against hazing. The University has a policy against hazing. It’s against the law in Oklahoma and 38 other states. Congress has passed legislation that keeps an individual who has hazed someone from receiving federal financial aid. Hazing is not tolerated at Oklahoma State University. If you have specific concerns, questions or comments, please contact the Office of Greek Life.

Alcohol Policy (top)

It is expected that the chapter or its individuals will neither misuse nor support the misuse of alcohol. It is an expectation of Oklahoma State University that the Greek System will establish a positive model for the rest of the campus community in the area of alcohol use.
